OpenAI is moving from tools to a full consumer platform with Sora, a standalone iOS app powered by the company new Sora 2 video model. Sora looks and feels like TikTok, vertical feed, endless scroll, likes, comments, remixes, but with one radical difference: every clip in the feed is generated by AI. Instead of uploading camera footage, users describe a scene, animate a still image, or remix an existing post, and the model renders a short video capped at 10 seconds, complete with synchronized audio. The app is launching invite-only in the United States and Canada, with broader availability expected later.

Sora core workflow is simple: write a prompt (or start from an image), hit generate, and get a 10-second vertical video (9:16 by default). A familiar “For You”-style feed surfaces content via a recommendation algorithm tuned for micro-clips, and a prominent remix button encourages iterative creation. For now, OpenAI says image-to-video of real people isn’t supported, and access requires an invite code during the current rollout.
Under the hood, Sora 2 advances the model OpenAI previewed in 2025 with more realistic physics, better control, and synchronized dialogue and sound effects. In OpenAI own positioning, Sora 2 is now the company flagship for video and audio generation and the engine behind the new social experience.
The app most talked-about feature is “Cameos”: you can give explicit permission for friends (or everyone) to generate AI videos that include your likeness. Importantly, OpenAI frames the person whose likeness is used as a “co-owner” of the resulting video, with the power to delete it or revoke permissions at any time. That sets a precedent for consent and shared control in synthetic media, and it’s an early attempt to design platform norms around identity in an AI-native feed.
OpenAI has also started rolling out finer-grained controls over how a user’s AI self can appear, limiting categories (e.g., politics) or avoiding specific contexts, which hints at where governance is headed for identity-based generation. These controls are evolving in response to concerns over deepfakes and misuse.
From day one, Sora inherits the thorniest questions in AI video: copyright, likeness rights, safety, and misinformation. Early reporting has already highlighted troubling content slipping through guardrails and the use of copyrighted characters in generated videos, prompting new promises from OpenAI to give rightsholders more granular control and to keep adjusting policy as real-world usage unfolds. The company has discussed takedowns, rights-holder workflows, and even potential revenue-sharing models, but the practical details (and the effectiveness of enforcement) remain moving targets.
On the safety front, OpenAI says Sora blocks extreme or pornographic content and constrains the generation of public figures without explicit, opt-in authorization. Still, as with any generative system at scale, edge cases appear fast. The combination of a public feed, high visual realism, and remix culture will test both technical filters and policy design and whether “consent by default” can be preserved in a viral environment.
For OpenAI, Sora is more than a feature drop, it’s a strategic step from API-centric tooling into the social, discovery, and creator-economy layer. In effect, the company is betting that the next breakout social format is AI-native video, not camera-native video. That would reposition OpenAI from “infrastructure behind content” to the place people actually go to create, watch, and share. If that bet pays off, OpenAI won’t just influence what gets made; it will shape how culture travels, which memes spread, which aesthetics dominate, and which creators (or models) get surfaced. Early coverage already frames Sora as a potential TikTok rival at least on iOS for now.
The 10-second limit might sound restrictive, but it’s arguably the right creative constraint for an AI-native medium. Short clips keep costs low, generation fast, moderation easier, and iteration rapid—crucial for a remix-driven network. Think of it as the “Vine” of AI video: a form where brevity forces clarity, and novelty wins. Over time, OpenAI could expand length or introduce “sequencing” tools that stitch shorts into longer narratives, but the initial cap builds habits and sets a predictable rhythm for the feed.
For brands, studios, and creators, Sora introduces a new content surface with built-in synthetic production. Instead of booking shoots, teams can prototype ideas as prompts, generate variations in minutes, and test creative resonance directly in the feed. That’s a powerful feedback loop, if the platform delivers reliable brand-safety tools, robust rights management, and clear monetization paths.
Sora launch echoes ChatGPT debut: a polished entry point that makes a complex capability feel simple, and social. The difference is that text lived comfortably in existing networks, while AI video needs its own stage. If OpenAI can keep Sora fun, safe, and participatory, it could define the template for AI-native social media. If not, it risks becoming a cautionary tale about scale, safety, and rights colliding in public.
